A Look Into Ashwaganda

Una mirada a Ashwaganda

s a Registered Dietitian, I am always being asked what the best types of drinks are that one should try and always have in their refrigerator. My motto is “Hydration is key!” and the best source of hydration comes from water – of course! However, in recent months, I stumbled across HOP WTR. A non-alcoholic sparkling hop water crafted with bold hops and mood-boosting, stress-busting ingredients. The booze-free beverages burst with flavors such as Classic (piney), Mango (juicy), Blood Orange (citrusy), Lime (tart), and Peach (sweet).

This unique blend of ingredients definitely sparked my interest, so I decided to do a deep dive into the product and acquaint myself with this hot new product. HOP WTR contains star ingredients such as Citra, Amarillo, Mosaic and Azacca hops, nootropics (L-Theanine), vitamin C, and adaptogens, specifically ashwagandha. I had a particular interest in ashwagandha.

Ashwagandha supports the body’s natural ability to deal with stress, something we all need. This plant adapts its functionality to the specific physical, chemical, or biological needs of the body. This is one of the most popular ayurvedic herbs commonly used to modulate stress and enhance wellbeing. What are ayurvedic herbs you may ask? They are used in ancient Indian healing that focuses on balancing the mind, body, and spirit. These herbs are used to “cleanse”, defend against disease, and balance the previously mentioned trio of mind, body, and spirit. As a Registered Dietitian, I am always promoting and encouraging natural, whole fruits and vegetables scientifically proven to have vitamins and minerals that are key in defending your body against disease and supporting immune strength. So the more natural a product, the better!

Upon further research, I learned that ashwagandha is an evergreen shrub that can be found in the semi tropical climates of India, Africa, portions of the Middle East, the Canary Islands, Australia, and Sri Lanka. Definitely not something grown by me here on the East Coast in the states. This therapeutic plant is sometimes known as “Indian ginseng” for its use in Korean teas and “winter cherry” for its visual appearance. The Ayurvedic medicine system has utilized ashwagandha for centuries in reducing inflammation, pain, and anxiety all while promoting energy and overall health and wellness. Furthermore, this plant has been proven to regulate cell death and improve blood flow. What CAN’T this powerful plant do?

Unlike some plant and herb species, every little bit and piece of the ashwagandha plant provides a medicinal benefit. Its flowers have aphrodisiac, diuretic, and astringent properties, while the leaves are used for treatment of fevers. Even the seeds can be utilized to improve healthy testicular growth and sperm count as well as serving as an antiparasitic treatment.

Ashwagandha contains antioxidant properties that have neuroprotective effects and can be beneficial in supporting generalized anxiety. Additional research indicates that the plant may even be beneficial in combating insomnia, improving memory, and reducing food cravings inadvertently assisting weight loss. Thyroid function improved with ashwagandha supplementation, as it increases the thyroid stimulating hormone which plays an essential role in the body’s metabolism. Ashwagandha is generally safe for individuals, however it is always recommended to consult your primary care provider and Registered Dietitian for further questions on the ingredient, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding!

Well, I am off to enjoy a Peach HOP WTR! And you can too! You try and buy all the bubbly, booze freeze goodness this product has to offer at the link below or find a store near you that carries these tasty, fruity flavors.
